JER BATT missed out by only a head when runner-up in last year's renewal and, 4lb lower this time, the five-year-old could well go one better with Oisin Murphy back in the plate. Rosario placed in the Portland here prior to finishing second at Ascot and remains of interest off his current mark, while Woolhampton faced a tougher test in Listed company last time and could make her presence felt back at this level. Trilby and Vintage Clarets are others worthy of a second look.
Naturally this is an intensely competitive sprint handicap and the ones to catch the eye most are TRILBY, Jer Batt, Lexington Blitz and Rosario. The last-named will be popular after winning last time but does look least well handicapped of the four. Preference is just for Trilby who enjoys some give and is in very reliable form. Jer Batt is a big threat, fitted with cheekpieces for the first time, very effective when it is testing and with a top man on board in Oisin Murphy. Lexington Blitz is in excellent form but perhaps wants a sound surface ideally.

Aidan O'Brien bids to win this for the 12th time, with HAWK MOUNTAIN preferred of his three representatives. The Beresford Stakes at the Curragh has provided plenty of recent winners of this contest and the son of Wootton Bassett made all when returning the impressive winner of that Group 2 at the Curragh. Stablemate Benvenuto Cellini struck at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend and makes more appeal than Action. Champagne Stakes runner-up Oxagon appears likely to be suited by an extra furlong and isn't discounted lightly.
As is so often the case this end of season finale for the top British and Irish juveniles looks like being dominated by Ballydoyle. Of the dangers to their trio, Oxagon may fair best, but it is hard to think he is not fully exposed and just a few pounds below what is required to win this. Item is unexposed but his action may suit a sound surface better than the testing ground he will face here and it is a reasonable bet that he'll get bogged down. Rochfortbridge is likeable but surely not good enough. It is very hard to choose between O'Brien's three. Action didn't have much room late on and was a fraction green still when running well in the Royal Lodge, he could improve and looks a good price in the early betting. Hawk Mountain was also green when winning a Group 2 at The Curragh last time. His action will suit the ground but visually he was the least impressive of the yard's representatives. That then points towards BENVENUTO CELLINI who looks to have the current first jockey up and won going away looking a very smart horse last time. He goes on soft.

LAM YAI continued on her upward curve when narrowly beaten in a Group 3 at Ayr. Well clear of the rest on that occasion, Karl Burke's filly is at home on testing ground and looks likely to launch another bold bid. Boston Dan found only one too good in Listed company at York a fortnight ago and enters calculations, while the less-exposed maiden winner Spanish Waltz could prove competitive in this higher grade with underfoot conditions in his favour.
It is hard to oppose LAM YAI in this after she seemed to improve markedly when running second in the Firth Of Clyde at Ayr. That is a tricky race to rate, but you'd have to take a very dim view of it to make her anything other than the form selection here. Boston Dan is a likely contender having been a good second in the Rockingham at York and himself running at least to his best form. Spanish Waltz will have supporters but third best may be Figjam who won easily down in class last time after running well in the Firth Of Clyde.

Colori Forever made a promising start when winning at Yarmouth before running with plenty of credit in a valuable sales race at Newmarket. An opening mark of 84 looks more than fair, but whether he handles testing ground or not is another matter. CHAPTER has no such worries following his nursery success at Salisbury, which came on heavy ground, and a 3lb rise is unlikely to stop him from progressing. Art Lover shaped at Kempton as though an extra furlong would benefit him and he appeals most of the remainder.
You would probably be able to throw a blanket overt all of these at the finish if they all ran to form. The most likely winner though is probably the unexposed COLORI FOREVER. He ran well when fifth in the Tattersalls October Auction race on just his second start and is open to quite a bit of improvement. The Resdev Scholar is from the other end of the scale having won a seller last time, but is quite nicely weighted. Third best might be Chapter who probably improved on soft ground to win on his nursery debut and strikes as a horse than can progress again.

Valvano bounced back from a poor effort at Epsom when third at Yarmouth and the drop in trip looks an interesting move, with this being his first appearance over a mile since finishing second to subsequent 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech at Kempton in April 2024. Walsingham is unbeaten this year and should remain competitive after a 3lb rise for his Ascot success. However, the less-exposed HIGH DEGREE may prove to be the answer, with the son of Too Darn Hot having every chance of taking advantage of an ease in grade.
This is a very competitive handicap and finding the winner will be a risky pursuit. Valvano is of interest having run close to his best when keen and not getting the clearest run last time. His mark looks very workable based on that. WALSINGHAM though may have even more in hand. He came a few lengths clear under hands and heels last time and with a stronger rider in the saddle may buckle down and find a bit more. High Degree is respected from a top yard and off a break but hard to make a case for on ratings and third best may be Galeron, who is suited by some give and has been on decent form.

Dwindling Funds is effective on a galloping track, which is a key factor as he bids to complete a hat-trick. However, a 7lb rise demands another personal best and, with that in mind, fellow last-time winner RAINBOW NEBULA shades preference. This is just his third start in a handicap and, given there was give underfoot when he struck at Ascot, the forecast may help draw further improvement. Rajapour and Tactical Plan are better than recent efforts and also warrant consideration.
DWINDLING FUNDS is a dour battler that is really well suited by testing conditions and may just out-fight these. Tactical Plan is a danger if returning to form tried in cheekpieces instead of blinkers. He didn't settle in head gear last time. Rainbow Nebula is also a contender. He's quite hard to weigh-up accurately having won an amateurs event last time upped to this trip and given some cut in the ground. The trouble is that those races are not the most reliable and he did benefit from probably the best jockey in the race.

The consistent Ey Up Its Jazz filled the runner-up slot in this race 12 months ago and can go well again, despite running off 7lb higher. Ffos Las winner Golden Pharaoh also boasts solid credentials, with deep ground not an issue. However, MYSTERYOFTHESANDS is versatile regarding underfoot conditions and having finished second on his only previous run over C&D - in the first division last year - the Tim Easterby-trained gelding could provide a bit of value. Wobwobwob and Catalyse also command respect.
Ey Up Its Jazz has been in tremendous form and deserves plenty of respect here but it may just pay to take a chance on CATALYSE coming back to his best. He flew home from off the pace last time when running close to form. A visor may just focus him a little more. Golden Pharaoh is a big danger. He was eased down a few lengths when winning last time and goes very well on heavy ground.
