Chepstow in October signifies the return of the National Hunt season proper in the UK and a competitive beginning to proceedings. Captain Simon built upon his point win when landing the odds in a bumper at Taunton and comes from a yard currently in excellent form. Dynamite Dollars boasts some solid bumper form and would have very solid claims if able to replicate it on hurdling debut. Fleminport, Vango De Vaige, and Natter Jack Croak all warrant a second look but the vote goes to LOSTINTRANSLATION. A race well worth the upgrade to Listed status having featured some top class individuals in its short history. Colin Tizzard enjoys targeting his good horses at the event having won it with Cue Card (2011) and had Native River finish third two years ago. This year he unleashes one of the most exciting horses for the season in FINIAN'S OSCAR, who arrived with a very tall reputation to the yard having been bought for 250,000 pounds at Cheltenham last November. He failed to disappoint throughout his novice hurdle campaign as he landed two Grade 1's, the Tolworth at Sandown and the Mersey at Aintree, before losing nothing in defeat behind Bacardys at the Punchestown Festival. He has reportedly schooled brilliantly over fences at home and it is expected he will take high rank in the division at distances between two and two and a half miles. Alcala has done little wrong over the summer months having won five on the bounce, including the Summer Plate at Market Rasen, but has something to prove against the selection, while Aintree My Dream and Tintern Theatre are no mugs.

Wholestone heads the market in the first big handicap of the season and Nigel Twiston-Davies' top novice from last term looks set for a bold bid as he bids to follow in the footsteps of his stablemate Ballyoptic, who triumphed in this 12 months ago. Dan Skelton runs both Three Musketeers and Whatduhavtoget, who is the mount of stable jockey Harry Skelton, while Peter Bowan's Souriyan arrives here on a hat-trick and could be still on the up. Harry Fry's Bags Grove is sure to be popular and is the choice of Noel Fehily, however, preference is for his stablemate DRUMCLIFF off a mark of 125. He had no luck at all last season, hammering on the door at Kempton before being brought down when primed for a big run at the Punchestown Festival. That leaves him on a rating which doesn't tell the full story of his potential ability and this is the type of pot he has been crying out to win. Court Minstrel is also considered from a mark 7lb lower than which he landed this contest off two years ago.

Sizing Codelco ended his season in excellent form when relishing the step up to 3m at both Aintree and Punchestown but, as a result, would have to be on the fringe of Gold Cup class to win this off 160. Potters Legend warrants the utmost respect on his return to action as he appears well handicapped on his fourth in the Kim Muir, but he will need to improve his jumping as it was littered with costly errors throughout last season. Bigbadjohn and Rock The Kasbah both look to have more to offer in staying handicaps but the former's stablemate RELENTLESS DREAMER looks worth chancing here. The return to 3m won't go amiss and he looks fairly handicapped on the pick of his form last season.
