GOWEL ROAD gets the tentative vote in a fiercely competitive handicap. The Flemensfirth gelding did little wrong on his first four outings, notching a double at Newbury, and can easily be forgiven a lacklustre performance in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham in March. The time off won't have done him any harm and, likely to be fairly wound up for his seasonal reappearance, he is fancied to run a big race. Proschema won at both Cheltenham and Aintree during the spring and warrants respect on his return to action, while Torigni, Orbys Legend and Dargiannini are others to note.

Paul Nicholls has a fine record in this race (successful in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020) and it would be a shock result if he doesn't win it again, with TIMEFORATUNE likely to be a short-priced favourite. The five-year-old was hugely impressive when winning a Ffos Las bumper on his debut in May and has since been purchased (and joined Nicholls from Brian Eckley) for a fee of 175,000 pounds. Colin Tizzard saddles a couple of interesting newcomers in West Orchard and Champagne Mesdames, while Great Heart'jac has a place squeak on the form of his penultimate effort.
