SEVERANCE was a useful handicapper on the Flat, finishing second off 91 in a class 2 Windsor contest over an extended 1m3f this summer, and is interesting on his hurdling bow for Ben Pauling. He gets the nod but could have plenty to fear from Bass Rock, who stepped up on his debut when runner-up (well clear of third) over C&D last month, and Honda Fifty, who filled the runner-up berth on all three bumper starts last season.

Top Tip: Severance (8)
Watch out for: Bass Rock (2)

BASS ROCK shaped well when second in a C&D novice last month and looks capable of going one better if coping with this different ground. Of the oppostion, Severance looks the most interesting given his exploits on the Flat, while Honda Fifty may prove best of the rest.

Course winner One Night In Milan is the highest rated but that is down to his hurdling form and he has questions to answer over fences after pulling up on his chasing bow, so preference is for CHAMPAGNE WELL. Fergal O'Brien's charge filled the runner-up berth in three Grade 2 novice events last season and should strip fitter for his return at Wetherby last month. Elf De Re is another who might have needed his reappearance run recently and is respected on his Grade 2 second at Kelso over 2m2f in February.

REMASTERED showed plenty of ability in bumpers/over hurdles and, as a big, strong sort, he can be expected to show even more now his attentions are turned to chasing. As such, he's marginally preferred to Champagne Well and Elf De Re, who both made pleasing starts over fences recently.

CHAMPAGNE TERRI has been in good form on the level since landing a Doncaster maiden hurdle with plenty to spare in March and can resume her progress in this sphere off what looks a fair opening market of 113. Stuart Crawford has enjoyed plenty of success with his raids to the venue from his Country Antrim base so his Island Mahee warrants respect, especially on the back of a neck second at Thurles last month, while Maid O'malley rates best of the rest.

Esprit Du Large comfortably sets the standard with his Grade 1 success at Sandown in December and will find this easier than his reappearance in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter last week, when he fell before things got serious. However, that was his second fall in a row after hitting the deck in the Arkle at Cheltenham and he has questions to answer now, so it could pay to take him on with WHOSHOTTHESHERIFF. Having won on his only start over hurdles here, he made an encouraging chasing bow when keeping on for second over this C&D last month and, expected to come on for that, could make the most of the 11lb he gets from the favourite. Kiltealy Briggs won in the mud at Kelso before pulling up in the Albert Bartlett last time and should appreciate the forecast heavy ground.

Watch out for: Esprit Du Large (1)

ESPRIT DU LARGE looks to have been found an excellent opportunity to get back on track and this Grade 1-winning novice is strongly fancied to successfully concede weight all round. Whoshotthesheriff rates the chief threat on the back of his encouraging C&D second, although Kiltealy Briggs has always appealed as the sort to do well over fences so shouldn't be underestimated on his chasing bow.

Donald McCain has his string in good order and there is sure to be plenty of support for his O'Hanrahan Bridge, who was doing his best work at the finish when returning with a close second over shorter (2m4f) last month. However, that was his fifth silver medal in a row and he may have to play second fiddle again, this time to SCOTTISH ACCENT. The Rebecca Menzies-trained gelding proved his stamina when second on heavy ground over 3m2f at Kelso in March and last month's Hexham spin should have blown away the cobwebs. The fast surface may have been against Talktomenow at Exeter latest and he must be considered on his 3m success with cut in the ground at Perth in September, but he is 10lb higher now.
