LEADING LIGHT's unbeaten run came to an abrupt end when Brown Panther slipped the field in the Irish St Leger, but if forgiven that defeat, then he is the one to beat on his return to the scene of his Gold Cup success. Estimate was agonisingly close in the Royal Ascot showpiece (subsequently disqualified for a prohibited substance) and bounced back to somewhere near her best in the Doncaster Cup, but perhaps she is seen to better effect beyond two miles. Forgotten Rules is the joker in the pack after just two starts, but he couldn't have been more impressive at Galway or in NH Flat company at Punchestown, and deserves a spot near the top of the shortlist, likewise Pallasator who is progressive and will likely relish these conditions as a son of Motivator.

G Force heads up the betting after getting the better of Gordon Lord Byron in the Betfred Sprint Cup but, at this stiff track on the forecast slow ground, he's far from certain to uphold the form. Maarek is at his best when the mud is flying and did remarkably well to get within three lengths of the winner in the Prix de L'Abbaye last time after playing up in the stalls. However, he won't get away with a tardy start here either and JACK DEXTER is taken to better his second-placed effort from 12 months ago and land the spoils. He's struggled on ground quicker than ideal this summer but performed with credit under a big weight on the 'wrong' side of the field in the Ayr Gold Cup last time. Viztoria landed the bronze medal behind the selection in last year's renewal and also commands plenty of respect, given the state of the ground, after beating stablemate Gathering Power with ease at the Curragh last time.

HADAATHA could prove extremely difficult to beat providing this doesn't come too soon after her Longchamp exertions and she handles the forecast bottomless ground. A progressive daughter of Sea The Stars, she was a real eye-catcher when flying home from the back to be beaten just half a length in third in the Prix De L'Opera Longines and, in theory, this extra quarter of a mile should help her improve again. Silk Sari could barely have been any more impressive when landing the Park Hill Stakes and that ability to stay further will stand her in good stead, while Chicquita is only behind Roger Varian's charge on official figures and was by no means disgraced in the Arc last time, beaten just over nine lengths.

CHARM SPIRIT showed his versatility when switching to a faster surface in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp and may even be seen to better effect with cut underfoot judging by his success in the Prix Jean Prat earlier in the season. He gets a tentative vote over Night Of Thunder, who trailed in third in Paris but didn't enjoy as smooth a passage from the rear of the field and may be able to reverse that form with a more privileged path this time. Integral has done little wrong this term and reversed form with her Prix Rothschild rivals when landing the Sun Chariot at Newmarket a fortnight ago, while Custom Cut, who bids for a six-timer, deserves a try at this level as one the season's most progressive horses.

A renewal that lacks some of the stardust that was anticipated a few weeks ago, with noticeable absentees including Australia, The Grey Gatsby and Kingston Hill, but an intriguing race nonetheless. CIRRUS DES AIGLES is hard to oppose in a race for which he has saved some of his best performances, including victory over So You Think in 2011 and pushing Frankel all the way a year later. He was again runner-up last season on the back of a troubled campaign, but he has bounced right back to his best this time around, defeating Treve in the Ganay and subsequent Arc runner-up Flintshire in the Coronation Cup, despite going lame in the closing stages. He showed no ill-effects from that setback last time and, entitled to be sharper for that outing, he can land his second Champion Stakes on ground that he will relish. Free Eagle adds a fascinating dimension to the contest on just his fourth career start having blown a solid Group 3 field apart at Leopardstown last time. He truly could be anything, and if his trainer is happy to let him take his chance then he demands the utmost respect. Ruler Of The World wasn't disgraced at Longchamp 13 days ago and he can go close if running up to the level of his third in this race last October. Noble Mission has been transformed since adopting front-running tactics this season but there is a suspicion that he will need to up his game in this company. Al Kazeem can land a place if back to his very best, while Western Hymn and Sheikhzayedroad will both enjoy the conditions and could land some each-way money if others flounder.
