DARGIANNINI couldn't have been more impressive in winning his bumper at Sedgefield in October by 20 lengths. Despite being the only member of the field not to boast any hurdling experience, Harry Whittington's gelding is a half-brother to Keeper Hill, who was a Listed winner as a novice hurdler, and he is taken to confirm the impression left on debut. Mackenberg needs to jump with more fluency than he did at Wetherby, while a more positive ride should see Straw Fan Jack to best effect over a shorter trip.

WALK IN THE MILL boasts excellent claims in becoming the first horse to land this contest for the third time. Robert Walford's stable star has always needed his first run of the year and didn't run too badly when seventh at Ascot in October, after which the handicapper dropped him 1lb. The return to these unique fences is likely to bring the best out of him and a bold bid is expected in defence of his crown. Kimberlite Candy was runner-up to the selection last season and built on that with an impressive victory in the Classic Chase at Warwick. That said, it wouldn't be a surprise if he was ridden with an eye more towards a return here in April so the main threats could prove to be Le Breuil, who was seventh in the race last year when shaping in need of the outing, and Yala Enki, who may reverse Cheltenham form with Ramses De Teillee as the grey has to prove his liking for these fences after his effort in the 2019 Grand National. At a bigger price, Smooth Stepper makes considerable appeal having run well when fifth at Sandown last month and that should have blown the cobwebs away for last season's Grand National Trial winner at Haydock.

Gavin Cromwell has won this contest twice in the last five years so it will be interesting to see if there is market support for his German Flat recruit Army Of One, who is pitched in at the deep end her on her hurdles bow. Alan King is another trainer with a strong recent record in the race (has won three of the eight previous runnings) so Her Indoors, another debuting over timber, is also worth monitoring in the betting. However, with the benefit of her comprehensive hurdles victory at Leicester under her belt, MEGAN rates the one to beat. Frodon defied a mark of 164 to claim a valuable handicap at Cheltenham in October under Bryony Frost and will always have a chance around here given how good his jumping is. The eight-year-old probably reserves his best for Prestbury Park, but has been successful at this venue in the past and can never be fully dismissed. Santini was second in the Gold Cup and that is likely to be his main target once more, though three miles around here might be sharp enough for this dour stayer on reappearance, and a chance can instead be handed to the evergreen NATIVE RIVER. Last year's winner always seems to run well fresh and, although he has only raced three times since March 2019, showed twice last season that he still oozes plenty of class.

Modus beat Springtown Lake (second) here by eight lengths last time, though the latter is fancied to get much closer now given that he is 9lb better off at the weights. Lord Du Mesnil finished second in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham and appeared to need his Kelso reappearance when well beaten last month. Senior Citizen is in good form and handles varying ground, but this could instead go the way of Alex Hales and HUNTSMAN SON. A comfortable winner at Wetherby five weeks ago, the 10-year-old did that nicely in spite of a 538-day absence, jumping well throughout, and could defy a 9lb rise under Kielan Woods.
