This was the first running of the race as a Group 1 and it resulted in a race-record time since this/its equivalent was moved to Ascot. That was reflective of ground that was fractionally on the quick side of “good” for races taking in the round course (firmer still on the straight) and also a notably strong gallop for such a small field. The runners all paid for it somewhat late on, though the patiently-ridden Sweet William less than the others, with Trawlerman posting another high-class effort in a truncated but excellent season. His final 2f went by in 26.19s for a 96.8% finishing speed.

TRAWLERMAN (121+ here, 123 previously) helped to ensure this was a thorough test under the conditions, understandably so given stamina is his long suit, though even he ended up finishing quite slowly as a result, still comfortably best, as he has been in all 4 starts since returning from Meydan. He led narrowly early then raced close up, going on again after 5f out and soon a few lengths clear, ridden 2f out and holding on well as the 2^nd ate slowly into his advantage. He will be an 8yo next year but there is no sign of age wearying him.

SWEET WILLIAM (119 here, 117 previously) ran at least as well as ever, a strongly-run race and waiting tactics showing him a good light as he was held up last but in touch, making an effort over 3f out, going 2^nd a few lengths down 2f out and staying on to make it closer than had looked likely.

AL QAREEM (104+ here, 114 previously) was below form, paying for helping to set a strong pace at a trip that is just beyond him.

STAY TRUE (84 here, 114 previously) was beaten too far out to blame the trip alone, though there is a fair chance he will prove best at 12f/14f.
